In today’s increasingly interconnected world, the ability to collaborate across cultures has become more than just a valuable skill—it’s a necessity. Whether in bustling multinational corporations, diverse academic institutions, or vibrant community organizations, intercultural collaboration shapes our daily lives in profound ways.

But what exactly is intercultural collaboration, and why does it matter?

At its core, intercultural collaboration is the process of people from different cultural backgrounds working together towards common goals. It’s an exchange of ideas, perspectives, and experiences that goes beyond mere coexistence, fostering a dynamic environment where diversity becomes a catalyst for innovation and personal growth.

As we navigate the complexities of a globalized society, the impact of these cross-cultural interactions extends far beyond the workplace. They challenge our preconceptions, broaden our worldviews, and ultimately contribute to our personal development in ways we might never have imagined.

Intercultural exchange offers many opportunities, research proves cross-cultural understanding leads to enhanced decision making, more creativity, it helps to serve global markets better and it leads to more profit. Did you know diversity in collaboration also stimulates cognitive diversity, it challenges you assumptions and biases and that it can lead to personal growth? Research by Engle and Crowne (2014) found that even short-term intercultural experiences can lead to increased cultural intelligence and global mindedness.

Intercultural collaboration often leads individuals to question their own cultural assumptions and biases. This process, known as cultural metacognition, can lead to more nuanced understanding and improved intercultural effectiveness. Research by Thomas et al. (2008) found that individuals who engage in cultural metacognition – reflecting on and questioning cultural assumptions – are more effective in cross-cultural interactions and decision-making.

Cognitive diversity refers to differences in perspective or information processing styles. In intercultural collaborations, this diversity is often heightened due to varying cultural backgrounds. Hong and Page (2004) demonstrated that cognitively diverse groups can outperform homogeneous groups of high-ability problem-solvers. They found that diversity in how people represent problems and go about solving them can be more important than individual ability.

Engaging with diverse perspectives through intercultural collaboration can lead to significant personal growth, particularly in areas such as empathy, open-mindedness, and cultural intelligence. Tadmor et al. (2012) conducted a series of studies showing that exposure to multiple cultures can enhance not just cultural knowledge, but also cognitive flexibility and integrative complexity – the ability to acknowledge and integrate competing perspectives on an issue.

Breaking Down Barriers: Fostering Effective Communication in Intercultural Settings

    We all know we need to break down some barriers to foster effective communications when collaborating internationally. It is a crucial aspect of successful collaboration. This topic encompasses several key areas:

    The most obvious, first things we run into are language barriers, differences in communication styles, and non-verbal ques.

    Language barriers not only involves spoken language, but also written communication and non-verbal cues. Research shows that that language barriers can significantly impact team dynamics and power structures within multinational teams. Furthermore, gestures, facial expressions, and personal space norms vary across cultures. Misinterpretation of these can lead to misunderstandings or offense. While tattoos are a way of expressing ourselves in Western Culture, they are experienced as offensive in a Japanese culture.

    We all know different cultures have varying norms for directness, politeness, and formality in communication. The Dutch are known for their directness, the English for their politeness, and so on. To explain the cultural differences, often Hall’s concept of high-context versus low-context cultures is used. High-context cultures rely more on implicit communication, while low-context cultures prefer explicit, direct communication.

    Coming back to the difference in communication styles, the Dutch directness is loved and hated; by the Dutch and abroad. Several of my clients appreciate the directness and can work with it, while others experience it as offensive.

    To break down barriers, we want to develop our Cultural Intelligence (CQ), which means we want to develop the ability to function effectively in culturally diverse settings. This usually starts with trust and being aware of our unconscious biases can hinder effective communication.  Trust is crucial for effective communication but can be more challenging to establish across cultural lines.

    Developing a Common Language is about creating shared understanding of terms and concepts. This means we want to realise different cultures have varying norms for giving and receiving feedback, and for addressing conflicts and understanding these differences is crucial for maintaining positive relationships.

But how? Something we all struggle with from time to time, so let mention a few ways to go about this:

    • Intercultural Networking within and outside of work by actively seeking out diverse professional groups or associations. Attend international conferences or cultural events or use social media platforms to connect with professionals from different cultures. If possible, participate in cultural exchange programs or international volunteering opportunities.
    • Global Connections: Build and maintain relationships with colleagues, clients, or partners from different countries and engage in cross-border collaborations or projects. Consider learning a new language to deepen connections with specific cultures.
    • Career Opportunities: Seek out roles that involve international collaboration or travel and highlight your intercultural skills and experiences on your resume. Consider international job postings or assignments and leverage your diverse network for career advancement and new opportunities

    This all needs life long learning and continuously educating ourselves about different cultures, customs, and business practices. We can work on our personal development by putting efforts on improving our soft skills. Practising active listening and empathy in intercultural settings, reflecting on our own cultural biases and work to overcome them and embracing the discomfort and view cultural misunderstandings as learning opportunities is all part of the journey.
